The Women’s Preventive Services Initiative: Recommendations for Women’s Preventive Health Care

Available: November 12, 2024 – November 11, 2026
Price: Free
Credit: 2 Credits AMA PRA Category 1TM
Estimated time to complete: 2 hours

This course will introduce the Women’s Preventive Services Initiative’s (WPSI’s) recommendations, also known as the HRSA Women’s Preventive Services Guidelines, to clinicians and increase the use of the recommendations in their routine practice. WPSI’s recommendations include screening for anxiety; screening for urinary incontinence; screening and counseling for intimate partner and domestic violence; obesity prevention in midlife women; contraception; well-woman preventive visits; HIV infection; counseling for sexually transmitted infections; breast cancer screening for average-risk women; screening for cervical cancer; breastfeeding services and supplies; screening for diabetes in pregnancy; and screening for diabetes after pregnancy.

Increased knowledge and usage of the recommendations will contribute to more women receiving a comprehensive set of preventive services without a copayment, coinsurance, or deductible, and thus improve adult women’s health across their life span. By the end of the course, participants will have an increased understanding of the WPSI, its methodology, how to access WPSI’s resources, and how to apply the recommendations in their work.

WPSI Recommendation: Patient Navigation Services for Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening

Available: March 10, 2026 – March 31, 2028
Price: Free
Credit: 1 Credits AMA PRA Category 1TM
Estimated time to complete: 1 hours

The Women’s Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI) developed a new recommendation on patient navigation services for breast and cervical cancer screening in December 2024, to increase utilization of screening recommendations based on an assessment of the patient’s needs. Patient navigation services involve person-to-person (eg, in-person, virtual, hybrid models) contact with the patient. Services include, but are not limited to, person-centered assessment and planning, health care access and health system navigation, referrals to appropriate support services (eg, language translation, transportation, social services), and patient education.

This course WPSI Recommendation: Patient Navigation Services for Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening is an opportunity for participants to understand the evidence and data that the recommendation was based on, which shows that patient navigation support can improve the efficacy and coverage of services across the breast and cervical cancer screening pathways. Since this is a new recommendation that is not yet widely practiced by clinicians, this course is useful for understanding the type of patient navigation services that are covered by health insurance plans, and it is beneficial for clinicians and anyone working with patients undergoing screening for breast and cervical cancer. As of 2026, the expanded services are covered without copay or deductible for women with eligible health plans.

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the WPSI and its mission
  2. Identify the methodologies used to develop the recommendation on patient navigation services for breast and cervical cancer screening
  3. Recognize the evidence and research that went into developing the recommendation
  4. Implement the patient navigation recommendation in their practice

WPSI Recommendation: Breast Cancer Screening for Women at Average Risk

    Available: March 10, 2026 – March 31, 2028
    Price: Free

Estimated time to complete: 1 hour

Screening mammography is only effective if steps along the clinical pathway are completed. If an abnormality is detected during the initial screen, additional screening through mammography, ultrasound, or other modality may be needed. Timely follow-up and initiation of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and management improve clinical outcomes, including survival. An evidence review conducted by the Women’s Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI) to update its recommendation on breast cancer screening for women at average risk found that gaps in insurance coverage contributed to incomplete follow-up after an initial mammogram for many women.

This course introduces participants to the WPSI’s updated recommendation on breast cancer screening for women at average risk that expands coverage to include imaging and pathology evaluation needed to complete the screening process. As of 2026, the expanded services are covered without copay or deductible for women with eligible health plans.

This course offers participants an opportunity to understand the research and data behind the updated recommendation. The WPSI expects that clinicians’ increased knowledge of this updated recommendation will improve their practice of providing these services and better support their patients to understand the expanded coverage.

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

    1. Describe the WPSI and its mission
    2. Identify the methodologies used to develop the recommendation for breast cancer screening for women at average risk
    3. Recognize the evidence and research that the recommendation is based on
    4. Implement breast cancer screening in their practice
