New Release: Preventing Obesity in Midlife Women

The WPSI is pleased to announce its newest recommendation, Preventing Obesity in Midlife Women. Under this recommendation, the WPSI recommends counseling midlife women aged 40 to 60 with normal or overweight body mass index to maintain or limit weight gain to prevent obesity. This new recommendation was published on August 2, 2022, in Annals of Internal Medicine, along with a systematic review of published evidence. In addition to the recommendation article and systematic review, Annals of Internal Medicine has published a video summary and summary for patients.

“The evidence is clear that obesity can lead to poor health outcomes among the people for whom we provide care. Counseling all of our midlife patients, particularly those who are entering or going through menopause, about weight management can help give them all the tools they need to live healthier lives. In addition, by having these conversations with all of our midlife patients, we can reduce stigma about weight by helping patients understand the changes that are occurring in their body during this specific time in their life, and these conversations feel nonjudgmental and collaborative,” said Christopher Zahn, ACOG’s chief of Clinical Practice and Health Equity and Quality.
